A great city is walkable
With a vibrant center
Pulsing with life,
Especially at sunrise
As she awakens
And prepares for another day
'Nawlins' is one of my favorites.

Water is an essential aspect of great cities
Whether river highway or a portal to the waterfront
it is the 'raison d'être' for the city.
And a park, a public green space...for common enjoyment.
Woldenberg park is such a place
Along the Mississippi
Fronting the French Quarter
A great place to watch the city be reborn daily

I leave the river and enter Jackson Square
Pausing to listen to the clip clop of the horse carriages
as they gather for the early tourists.
Street cleaners wash down the often original cobble stone roads.
Car tires hiss along the wet pavement.
I stop for a cafe au lait at the Cafe du Monde
An institution since 1862 for locals and visitors alike
It has changed ownership, with new staff and new attitude
Cafe du Monde is sadly no longer the stuff of legend
as in the 'Dave Robicheaux' novels of James Lee Burke.

Near the French Market I deposit the watery cafe au lait in a trash bin and cross to Decatur Street.
The nightclubs are closed
Condensation on the windows is testament to last night's revelry and yesterday's rains.

New Orleans is divided into 17 Wards
Downtown wards, 4-9, start north and east of Canal Street
Fanning around the curve of the Mississippi
Like fingers stretching deep into terra firma

This area is more industrial and the homes shotguns rather than townhouses.
I sweat not from a press of humanity but from the cloak of humidity.
I notice later that my lens on my smudged iPhone was fracturing highlights with the glaze of moisture
A Pepsi machine would not have worked as well.

Renovation, restoration and rejuvenation
Construction cranes dot the horizon
There is renewed confidence in New Orleans

Optimism is contagious
New Orleans is a feast of the senses
Sometimes bawdy
Always flamboyant
But privacy too is integral to the character of this city
Residences are the oases
The public face to the street
Hides the soul of grace and ease
